SERVICE PROJECTS:  A major undertaking for our club was the construction of a Lions Park at Shoreham Village, a home for special care in Chester. What started as an area of trees and bushes materialized into a beautiful park for the enjoyment of the residents. We have completed work on another major undertaking, a Lions Park at the Ross Farm in New Ross. The park is directly across from the New Ross Consolidated School on highway #12.

VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY SERVICES:   Our club provides volunteer labour for the following community activities: Forties Garden Party bingo; New Ross Farmer's Association bingo; Youth Soccer Association canteen at  soccer tournaments;  New Ross Area Christmas Festival turkey dinner. Any money raised goes to the group organizing the activity.

VON WHEELS TO MEALS: Club members assist with the VON wheels to meals programs at Chester Basin. Seniors come to the legion hall and enjoy a good meal, entertainment and an informative program. This happens monthly on the first Tuesday of the month during the fall, winter and spring seasons. To register for the meals please call Kathy Uhlman at 624-1897.

FROZEN FAVORITE MEALS:  Available in the New Ross, Chester Basin, and Chester areas. In New Ross, call Lion Frank Meister 689-2150, or Lion Sharon Rafuse 689-2402. In Chester Basin and Chester, call Kathy Uhlman or Lesley Taylor at the Lunenburg County Branch VON 624-0318. Meals are delivered to your home by a smiling Lion. All proceeds go to the VON programs.

SENIOR'S SAFETY CHECK IN PROGRAM: Our club is participating in another VON program. Every Monday, between 9 am and noon, a club member calls a list of seniors who have signed up for this program. Other groups and organizations call the other six days of the week. The goal of the program is to check in with seniors living alone to see if they are alright. For information about this program call Kathy Uhlman or Lesley Taylor at 624-0318.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES:  We place a strong emphasis on youth activities and take part in the peace poster and drug awareness poster contests. Two $500.00 bursaries are awarded each year to graduating students at Forest Heights. Our club also participates in the speak-out contest, a public speaking program for grade IX to XII students.

USED EYEGLASSES: The club collects used eyeglasses that are sent to the CNIB for distribution in developing countries. Collection boxes are at the New Ross Credit Union, Chester Pharmasave and the Chester United Baptist Church. If you want to donate used eyeglasses, put them in a collection box, or contact one of the Lions. More than one-fourth of the population in developing countries need corrective lenses. Therefore, by taking the time to donate used eyeglasses, you will help improve the quality of someone's life in a developing country.

HEARING AID RECYCLE PROGRAM.  Give some fortunate individual the gift of improved hearing by donating your used hearing aid. To donate used hearing aids call Lion Sandra Zwicker at 275-3629 or Lion Beatrice Meister at 689-2150.

NORTHWOOD IN-TOUCH: Our club is a satellite for Northwood In-Touch, a personal response system to be used in emergencies. We install and service two different units, one that is used in conjunction with the regular telephone, and one that replaces the regular telephone. This unit has personal reminders that can be programmed into the unit, such as reminding the client to take medication, when a home care worker is coming, etc.  As well as being a valuable service activity, this is a fund-raiser for our club as we get fees for installation and monthly maintenance per unit.

For additional information about these units, contact Lion Frank Meister  fmeister@ns.sympatico.ca  in the New Ross area, or Lion Jim Barkhouse evans.wharf@ns.sympatico.ca  in the Chester and Chester Basin areas.

VIAL OF LIFE PROGRAM: This program involves providing vials in which medical information is stored. Vials are stored in the upper right hand side of a fridge and a decal is placed on the front door of the house informing emergency staff that there is a vial in the fridge containing vital medical information. All funding for this program came from corporate sponsorships. Vials are now available for distribution. For more information about this program, contact Lion Sandra Zwicker (275-3629) e-mail sandrazwicker@bigfoot.com

LIONS PROJECT PRIDE: Canadian flags and certificates are presented to grade I students at both New Ross Consolidated and Chester District Schools. This is an annual fund-raiser for Lions Foundation of Canada that is designed to instill in our students a pride in our country.
